Local 1598 Joint Labour/Management Training Committee

The Local 1598 Joint Labour/Management Training Committee has been established comprised of Wayne Farey of Campbell Construction, Lyle Scroggs of Farmer Construction, Wayne Cox and Shan O’Hara.

Apprentice Training:

The Committee is paying $300 directly to Camosun for each level of apprenticeship at Camosun College if you register for classes through the Union. Come into the office to arrange for Camosun class registration. You may be already registered or paid for your next class, but a quick call to our office will guarantee your $300 tuition reimbursement.

Training Incentives:

This is to advise you that the Local 1598 Carpenter Joint Labour/Management Training Committee is offering Carpenters and Apprentices a 50% reimbursement of the tuition for the courses listed below.

Carpentry & Construction

Blueprint Reading and Estimating

Learn to read, understand, and use blueprints, including symbols and scales and the basics of preparing an estimate. With a focus on residential construction, this course will be of interest to carpenters who want to understand and read blueprints and to those new to the estimating process.

Carpentry CQ (Red Seal/IP Challenges)

Provides a practical review of required theoretical knowledge for carpenters preparing to write the Challenge exam for Red Seal (IP) certification. Student is responsible for exam fees and confirming practical experience requirements with ITA (BC’s Industry Training Centre). Phone 1-866-660-6011 or visit their website at www.itabc.ca. Students with rusty math skills are encouraged to also take Carpentry Math (TTAC 500V). Please note: class meets Wednesday nights and every other Saturday. Textbooks are available at the Interurban Bookstore, approximately $300: Carpentry (Lewis & Vogt), Principles and Practices of Commercial Construction (Andres & Smith), Canadian Wood-Frame House Construction (CMHC). Please bring texts and a trig calculator (Sharp DAL: EL 531W or 520W) to first class. Note: Course offered 10 nights and every other Saturday (Feb. 16, Mar. 1, 15, 29, Apr. 12).

Carpentry Math

Brush up on your math skills using real problems encountered in the field. Learn to calculate area and volume, use geometry to plan stairways and roofs, and practice calculations used in site layouts. This course is an excellent review for carpenters and apprentices preparing to write their TQ/IP exams and for those who just feel “rusty” on their math. No text required, but bring a trig calculator to class.

Essentials of Wood Frame House Construction

Want to learn more about the house construction process? Thinking of building a new house? This course is designed to help you get started. You will learn about the stages of construction, regulatory and legal requirements, permits, inspections, healthy housing concepts, building components and much more. This course is offered in partnership with the Homeowner Protection Office, Canada Mortgage & Housing Corporation, the Building Officials’ Association of BC, and the Canadian Home Builders’ Association of BC. Required textbook, Canadian Wood-Frame House Construction is available at the Interurban Bookstore or at the Carpenter Union Office.

Drafting (Architectural)

From basic linework and use of drafting tools to building technologies and structural requirements this comprehensive introduction will get you drafting! For those new to drafting or those wanting to further develop their skills. Final project is a houseplan to specifications as required for City Hall submissions. Note: For Winter, no class March 24 due to holiday.

First Aid Training

IF YOUR EMPLOYER or THE UNION HAS PRE-APPROVED YOUR TRAINING COURSE - the Training Committee will reimburse 100% of First Aid course.

In addition, designated First Aid Attendants receive an additional .75 cents per hour on wages.
