The National Apprenticeship and Training Advisory Committee (NATAC), a body of the Canada Council of Carpenters, held the 2007 Canadian National Apprenticeship Contests for Carpentry, Drywall and Millwright August 17 & 18, 2007 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Congratulations go to Andrew Brown from Local 1598, Victoria, for winning first place in carpentry. Andrew joins a long list of contest winners from Local 1598. Recent Local 1598 winners of the National Carpentry contest were Paul St. Jacques in 2005, Neil Cottier in 2002 and Steve Thomas in 1998.
These victories are a tribute to Local 1598 members who work diligently to mentor these apprentices every day on the job site in addition to the competent instruction they receive at Camosun College.
The 2008 National Contests will be at Ships Point in the Inner Harbour, Victoria, British Columbia in conjunction with the 2008 Canada Council of Carpenters Convention which will be held in the Fairmont Empress Hotel.
The Local 1598 Joint Labour Management Training Committee looks forward to hosting this event and extends a warm invitation to the contestants from across Canada.

Congratulations go to Andrew Brown who placed first at the 2007 Local 1598 Apprenticeship Contest held on Saturday, June 23.
Andrew will go on to compete against contestants from across Canada in the 2007 National Carpentry Apprenticeship Contest to be held August 17 & 18, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Pieter John and Matthew Powell also deserve honourable mention as all contestants performed to a high calibre. In fact, this year’s contestants demonstrated the long established tradition of excellence shown by past Local 1598 participants in Brotherhood Apprenticeship Contests.
The contest consisted of a 2-hour written exam and a 4½-hour practical that included a transit exercise. Judges were Matt Cottier, Reece Tibbitt and John Post.
Thanks go to Farmer Construction for providing their Keating X Road yard (complete with BBQ and all the fixins) where the practical was held.
The first place prize was a Bosch Reciprocating Saw, Bosch Radio/DVD Player and a Local 1598 Jacket. 2nd and 3rd place received Bosch Circular Saws.
