Local 1598 Contestant Ryan O'Hara Wins
2008 Canadian National Carpentry Apprenticeship Contest

The National Apprenticeship and Training Committee (NATAC), a body of the Canada Council of Carpenters, held the 2008 National Apprenticeship Contest for Carpentry, Drywall and Millwright, September 5 & 6, 2008 in Victoria, B.C. at Ships Point on Victoria’s Inner Harbour.

Congratulations go to Ryan O’Hara from Local 1598, Victoria for winning first place in carpentry. Ryan joins a long list of contest winners from Local 1598. Recent Local 1598 winners Wayne Cox, Shan O'Hara, Douglas McCarron, Ryan O'Haraof the National Carpentry Contest were Andrew Brown in 2007, Paul St. Jacques in 2005 and Neil Cottier in 2002.

Paul Adams, Local 579, St. John’s, Newfoundland placed first in the Drywall Contest and Geoff Little, Local 2736, Surrey, B.C. placed first in the Millwright Contest.

The contests consisted of written exams, level and transit exercises and 8 hour practical examinations where the contestants showed their skills to the public.

Judges in carpentry were Matt Cottier, John Post, and Camosun College instructors Grant Newburg and Al Van Akker. Judges in drywall were Guy Kiss, Chris Kerrie and Carl Anderson.

The Awards Banquet, held at the Fairmont Empress Hotel with 280 guests was the largest ever attended. General President Doug McCarron presented trophies, prizes and participant awards to the contestants.

Cash awards of $500, $300 and $200 were presented to the first, second and third place finishers in each trade category provided by American Technical Publishers who produce text books for trades training.

All carpentry contestants received circular saws, drywallers received screw guns and millwrights received cordless drills courtesy of Bosch Tools. Stanley Tools, a long time supporter of the National Contests supplied many hand tools to all contestants such as hammers, squares, levels and tape measures. We thank Stanley, Bosch and American Tech for their support to this years contest.

The Canada Council of Carpenters convention followed the National Apprenticeship Contest on September 7 & 8 at the Fairmont Empress.

The Local 1598 Joint Labour/Management and Training Committee extends thanks to volunteers and supporters of the 2008 National Apprenticeship Contest.

2008 Local 1598 Apprenticeship Contest

The Local 1598 annual Apprenticeship Contest was held June 14, 2008. In addition to carpentry, we held a Drywall Contest this year.

Congratulations go to Ryan O’Hara who placed first in Carpentry and Ben Coates who placed first in the Drywall Contest. Both Ryan and Ben will represent Local 1598 in the National Apprenticeship Contest to be held September 5 & 6 in Victoria.

Rob Wishart placed second in Carpentry and Wes Powell came in third. Kris Hayward placed second in Drywall.

The contests consisted of a written exam and a 4 ½ hour practical that included a transit exercise (for carpentry only).

Carpentry Judges were Matt Cottier, Grant Newburg, Al Van Akker and John Post. Drywall Judges were Steve Guiney and Chris Kerrie.

Thanks go to Farmer Construction for providing their Keating X Road yard. Members in attendance enjoyed the BBQ , good weather and brotherhood.

2007 Canadian National Carpentry Apprenticeship Contest

Andrew Brown at the National Carpentry Apprenticeship ContestThe National Apprenticeship and Training Advisory Committee (NATAC), a body of the Canada Council of Carpenters, held the 2007 Canadian National Apprenticeship Contests for Carpentry, Drywall and Millwright August 17 & 18, 2007 in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Congratulations go to Andrew Brown from Local 1598, Victoria, for winning first place in carpentry. Andrew joins a long list of contest winners from Local 1598. Recent Local 1598 winners of the National Carpentry contest were Paul St. Jacques in 2005, Neil Cottier in 2002 and Steve Thomas in 1998.

These victories are a tribute to Local 1598 members who work diligently to mentor these apprentices every day on the job site in addition to the competent instruction they receive at Camosun College.

The 2008 National Contests will be at Ships Point in the Inner Harbour, Victoria, British Columbia in conjunction with the 2008 Canada Council of Carpenters Convention which will be held in the Fairmont Empress Hotel.

The Local 1598 Joint Labour Management Training Committee looks forward to hosting this event and extends a warm invitation to the contestants from across Canada.

Congratulations go to Andrew Brown who placed first at the 2007 Local 1598 Apprenticeship Contest held on Saturday, June 23. Andrew Brown - Winner 2007 Local 1598 Apprenticeship ContestAndrew will go on to compete against contestants from across Canada in the 2007 National Carpentry Apprenticeship Contest to be held August 17 & 18, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Pieter John and Matthew Powell also deserve honourable mention as all contestants performed to a high calibre. In fact, this year’s contestants demonstrated the long established tradition of excellence shown by past Local 1598 participants in Brotherhood Apprenticeship Contests.

The contest consisted of a 2-hour written exam and a 4½-hour practical that included a transit exercise. Judges were Matt Cottier, Reece Tibbitt and John Post.

Thanks go to Farmer Construction for providing their Keating X Road yard (complete with BBQ and all the fixins) where the practical was held.

The first place prize was a Bosch Reciprocating Saw, Bosch Radio/DVD Player and a Local 1598 Jacket. 2nd and 3rd place received Bosch Circular Saws.
